Do we have enough defenders?

- Duffy

as defenders who made Premiership appearances for us last season. Is this enough in your opinion, do we have to bring someone in or are our Reserve Team players good enough to replace our first team defenders?

neville can cover any of the back 4 positions well enough so have 7 defenders more than enough!!!

We're OK. Distin would cover left back if Baines got injured, two right backs (three if you involve Coleman) and four centre-halves - even Duffy has proven he's good enough to step in.

When Distin leaves we'll have to strengthen but at the moment it isn't a priority position IMO.

Neville and Coleman both played last year.

Thats 8 players who made appearances for us last year in the squad.

So a first choice 4 of Neville, Jagielka, Heitinga, Baines and a reserve back 4 of Coleman, Duffy, Hibbert, Distin.

That's more than adequate.

If Moyes does trust Duffy enough to play him (and I think he does judging on last season) then it really is only left back we lack cover for and even there, both Neville and Distin can fill in and two of our biggest fringe youth players are both left backs, so while I do worry Distin is looking a bit past it and I'd be very surprised if Heintinga signed a new deal, this window, we're fine. It's January/next summer where I suspect we'll be on the lookout for some new blood there.

I'd love to be proved wrong in the first few weeks of the season, but toward the tail end of last season and preseason so far this, he's not looked great. It's more than just raw speed, he seems to be slicing it and stabbing it out or away more now. I just get the feeling Distin will start to tail off a bit more noticeably this year. I'd expect our starting centre back pair against United to be Heitinga and Jagielka.

So do I, but I think that that is more a preparation for the future (despite Jags now being 30). I imagine that it may be noticeable later in the season but I thought that even toward the latter end of last season he still looked strong and sharp... suppose we'll see. In relation to the question though, we have enough defenders

Couldn't agree more. The stats prove Distin isn't past it, too.
