For anyone who is as useless at DIY as me, come here and post your mishaps in this thread and get it off your chest.

I moved into a new flat not so long ago, rental but no furniture, lighting whatsoever. I finally ordered a load of lighting and ordered the recommended bulbs for each lamp. Got an electrician to install everything yesterday and realised that the bulbs for each lamp are different brightnesses. My flat looks absolutely mental. One room in particular is so bright that I actually think it might damage my eyes lol

So you bought the materials and got a spark to do the work? Which “I” did you actually DY, here?

I was merely trying to highlight that even with the help of a professional I managed to make a pig's ear of it. That's how bad I am.
A proper talented person. lol

I bought an apartment a while back and did a lot myself - it's sadly noticeable that I have done exactly that as you can tell which parts are just a tad more... crap lol compared to the parts experts have done. It all functions as well as it could though, even if it isn't the prettiest :)

Did amazing paint (IF I DO SAY SO MYSELF HEY) and some decent electricalwork though, woohoo

Good work mate, you're a better man than me. It's all like an alien language to me.

I sliced my finger off on a fray bentos lid while fixing my toilet seat
I'm intrigued...

Didn't take a picture, something about trying to stop blood leaking that kinda stopped me lol

I actually cut it on a frey bentos tin! Was trying to pull the lid off it because a couple of tiny parts hadn't opened and this time my hand must have went through a slicing motion on the lid right accross my hand. Very deep as well, neighbor said they could see the inside of my hand lol

My own fault like, surprisingly remained quite calm. Only started to worry when I saw how dark the blood was coming out.

@Ghost Rider is your hand better now mate?

Been boarding out the attic this week, had a sketchy moment where I almost rolled through the ceiling when I moved too far back on a board that was just placed. With cat like reflexes I managed to fling myself onto some boards that were secured. DIY master status still intact, along with my back and celling.

When we moved into out house the previous occupants had left a pretty tacky looking fake chandelier hanging on the living room lightbulb It was a bit involved taking it down as it was an all in one thing that was wired in. Got it out and then had to wire in a fresh fitting which I'd done before so was pretty confident.

Halfway through got a bit unsure and figured I'd look at the middle room fitting to make sure I was doing it right. Looked alright so I carried on and come the big switch on got precisely nothing....as well as all the lights downstairs not working. Brother-in-law knows his stuff so gave him a bell and he came round and had a look himself. Looked OK, double checked it and...still no lights downstairs. Figured a problem with the loop but couldn't work it out.

Both utterly confused so ended up getting a spark in. He came round with his mate, they both looked it over, checked it and still nothing. Went and had a look at the fuse box and everything was in order. Eventually he took another look at the middle room light and figured out that the earth had worked slightly loose in the middle room when I was taking a look and that was the issue with the loop.

Of course he'd have probably got to the bottom of it quicker if I'd told him I'd took a look at the middle room fitting but as a man I was of course far too busy claiming ignorance of it all and pinning all the blame on my "expert" Brother-in-law who I lied had come round at Mrs C's request and bodged it while I was out doing some manly grafting at work.

Mrs C very kindly didn't intervene with the truth as she recognised my man-of-the-house male pride was taking a drubbing and would not have survived the thinly veiled derision of a skilled tradesman as he put right an idiots work.
