See, thats why I come on here, if you don't know something, someone on here will. The wisdom of crowds. Knowledge is power.
Wisdom of crowds...great book. There is a section about how they found a sunken submarine by getting a whole load of people to individually say where it was.....sort of mass pin the tail on the donkey type thing...took the average and bingo......great book

Anyway carry on

was it true ?

Yes. The Sub was called the scorpion and went down in may 1968... The navy said they could estimate the position to a circle of 20 miles. When a whole load of intelligent but clearly non naval men estimated it together they got to within 220 yards of the wreck. They had mathematicians, meteorologists, salvage men, divers etc and turned the exercise into a gambling game.

Here's the final quote.

"whats astonishing about this story is that the evidence that group was relying on in this case amounted to almost nothing. It was really just tiny scraps of data. No one knew why the sub sank, how fast it was travelling, or how steeply it fell to the ocean floor. And yet even though no one in the group knew any of these things the group as a whole knew them all"

they must have had a lot of them, cos 37,000 of us cant seem to transmit where the net is to the strikers.
