As derby day rapidly approaches what does it mean to you, you know that corner of the inner self that always needs satisfying, that craving the lust for revenge if you like. Gone are the days of sporting derbies, thanks the that insidious individual Emlyn Hughes when rivalries were in fun and some respect was shown by both camps. Matters have become more aggressive, more hate filled and in all fairness less balanced as an event between equals over recent years.
We can muse over the reasons for this modern day attitude between fans all day, one thing is certain, it is not healthy but it does exist. At times these matches have been on par with David and Goliath. David, that handsome young king to be up against some hideous ogre of a Philistine who believes himself to be invincible. The vast majority of the nation, I'm sure, wish us well in these encounters simply because its Liverpool we are playing and that is entirely understandable knowing the contempt they are held in outside the confines of Anfield and Norway.
Being a romantic I would love to see the derby attitudes between both sets of supporters from the sixties and early seventies return but know deep down that such a wish is now a mere pipe dream. Liverpool fans have grown a complacent contempt for our club, which is not surprising in view of some poor performances over the years, but that arrogance is their weakness, no team has a God given right to anything, especially that lot.
So what does derby day really mean, is it right against wrong, good versus evil or is it just another game. To statisticians that is all it is, just another game. To fans from both camps across the city, yes even the small red one that remain, it is far deeper than that, it has become a part of your very being, it means far more than most things and at times takes on dangerous mental processes's bring to the surface anger, resentment and contempt from both sides. The few Merseyside based reds remaining will tell you its all about bragging rites, I would agree with that but then add this: for us blues it means far more than even that, it means our present squad will have arrived, it will mean that the balance of power will have move and a win would serve to cap this season and point us toward a success filled tomorrow. I may even visit church on Sunday morning to see if the big guy will give us a lift, a win means that much
