Everton boss David Moyes is hopeful new signing Denis Stracqualursi will prove to be a gamble worth taking.

The forward, last season's top scorer in Argentina, is one of only two fit recognised strikers available after the exits of Yakubu and Jermaine Beckford.

Moyes said the 23-year-old Argentine, a last-minute signing on loan from the Tigre club, "looks like he can finish".

"He has a good goalscoring record in Argentina but I'm not sure yet, we'll find out in time," added Moyes.

"We had Stracqualursi watched in Argentina last year and he was valued a lot more than we got him for - we took him for nothing.

"There weren't an awful lot of centre-forwards out there we could get and he became available to us at the last minute.

"In the end it was nearly worth the gamble to see how he does. We've done it before with loan signings; some have worked and some haven't."

Moyes is looking to midfielder Tim Cahill to supplement his strikeforce in the coming weeks with Victor Anichebe sidelined for two months with an ankle injury.

"I do expect to play Cahill up front," said Moyes, who is preparing his side for Saturday's visit of Aston Villa.

"He played up front against QPR so we will use him there.

"We have more options in midfield with the likes of Ross Barkley, Jack Rodwell, Marouane Fellaini, Leon Osman, John Heitinga and Phil Neville.

"Where we don't have a lot of options is at centre-forward."

Another new signing, Royston Drenthe, is also in the squad for the clash against Villa, with both new boys expected to start from the substitutes bench.

Fills me with confidence...

2 strikers out...1 in that he doesnt sound too impressed with.

That transfer deadline day just doesnt make much sense to me...

Did we have strikers lined up? Were Beckford and Yak always gonna go? If Denis wasnt available would they have gone and would've we got anyone in?....

Well he's hardly what you would call a 'superstar' signing.

Still..............The kopites will have their say.

How to spot a kopite..............They constantly **** off the manager and the team, whilst saying **** all, or "sitting on the fence" when it comes to the board.

Er....wha?

I wouldn't go round calling people kopites on here mate. Not generally appreciated.

This fills you full of confidence about the new boys - from everton site:

Moyes talking about scouting Denis in April:

"We went out there, we weren't quite sure and he became available to us right at the last minute."

Between the lines... we thought f?ck it, keep everyone bit quieter while we sell Mikel.

Moyes on Drenthe:

"Everybody tells me he's a terrific player."

If someone told you to jump off a cliff David?

I don't mean it, sure they'll be great but makes you think.

"He played up front against QPR so we will use him there."

Ah yes, that one turned out great, didn't it?

And he's moaning about CFs but he's the one who let two of them go. And one of them didn't want to go at all.

I'm fed up with him to be honest. He's arrogant, he's stubborn, he's predictable and he's got tinier balls than EFCNIK.

You missed the bit before that about his value being higher at the time of us scouting him so maybe we wasnt sure about him at the price he was valued at. I think he'll be a good gamble and his style of play, size and physicality will help him.

And Moyesy said we wanted Drenthe last year but we couldnt afford to sign him out right or summat so he as been on the radar and he as seen him play but people in the game tell him he's good, and if you've seen him play you will know he is too!.

People should stop being so sceptical and stop making mountains out of mole hills, of course Stracqualursi is a risk and Moyes doesnt want to say too much about him and raise expectations on him and amongst fans cos he does need time to settle and get into the groove and everyone should know that Drenthe was a serious talent years ago and is still young enough to improve and people should stop thinking that these 2 was not known of or watched cos they will of been and Moyesy clearly thinks they can do a job or else he wouldnt of signed em!

So lets stop jumping to conclusions and get behind them both and the team, starting tomorrow! COYB!.

Not exactly inspiring stuff from the manager, is it?

I'm quite excited about Drenthe, myself.

That's what I thought. Maybe he's going for the old Fergi mind trick..... play it down, play it down.

I do think Drenthe will be quality for us though.

Don't give a **** lad, I've already been banned once. I don't like the attitude of some Evertonians on this site and I'm not afraid to speak my opinion.

Negative and destructive, that's what they are.

Look...we all know you wanna be the big dick around here, swinging it in everyones face.

Put it away, stop being a biff, and play nice or you'll go on the naughty step.
