Has anyone ever bought a dehumidifier, is it any good? We had a leak in the house and now Mrs C is convinced we need a dehumidifier, it is going to be easier to buy one than to convince her otherwise. Looking for advice.

If the leak was a bad one then hire an industrial one over a weekend and make sure the rooms where it's to be used are sealed and as air tight as possible then leave it to do it's thing. Empty bucket when required.

No idea if you need one full time but the water extracted with a hired one should give you an idea if you do

There's cheap ones you can get that work very well, they've got silica beads (I think) in them. I had them before and they did the trick..no point in spending a fortune on a machine for a small job like yours.

I admire your confidence in the advice you’ll get on here then using it to persuade Mrs C you don’t need one. I can picture it now “Oh Trueblue84 says it’s a waste of money, he must be qualified. You were right all along Caolam, I’m sorry for ever doubting you now TrueBlue84 has confirmed it”

Is that how it went in your head?

Definitely not qualified but had a bad leak when I was renovating my house. The kitchen was like rainforest cafe with water cascading along the whole ceiling. Had the decorators in at the time and they advised me to open windows and have the heating on. Also helped that I could take up the floorboards upstairs. Dried out within a week.

We're bought at decent one because we get damp in the house, especially in the winter when doors and windows are kept shut. I put it on in the landing and pretty much leave it on 24/7. It switches on and off as it senses the moisture in the air.

Don't think I'd buy one if we didn't have longer term damp issues.

Cheaper to solve the damp problem ......hire one once sorted for a week .....

We live in an old house, that doesn’t “ breathe “ well.

We have one going all Autumn/ Winter and it makes a really big difference.

Don’t buy cheap, as the motors burn out if they’re on all the time.

De Longi are very good and last a long time.
