Part of it's cultural. Part of it is the current gun laws.

But a big part of it is long uninterrupted borders with a nation that is run by drug cartels and corrupt politicians. Even if we somehow were able to confiscate all of the guns currently in circulation, more would just cross the border.

The UK and Europe never had (at least not in the modern era) cultures of self-reliance to the extent that many parts of the United States do. The US west and south pride themselves on not needing the government (although they seem perfectly happy to use many government services). So they want to take care of their own protection, and believe they need a firearm to do so. Add the glorification of war culture through video games (lol at me) and other media to make guns seem cool and you end up with a general populace that doesn't want to outlaw guns.

Furthermore, many Americans simply do not trust the government to have all guns, they fear a situation in which they are powerless to defend themselves from the state itself. Whether these fears are founded, reasonable or sane are not the question, they exist and their existence lends to the general intractability of the populace to approve of sweeping gun legislation.

Please note, that while I personally would love to see a gun free America, I realize that it is a fantasy and that we need to work on the issues of gun violence from other directions than a blanket banning of guns.

Either way, guns aren't going away in the US. We need to deal with the culture of violence, the class divisions that cause tension, and improve our educational and economic outlook to minimize the amount of disenfranchisement that so often leads to problems with guns.
That's no way to talk about Canada mate.

It's bizarre logic to me as I see the negative to it - more people with guns just means more people will shoot more people. It becomes normalised so shooting people is as standard as having a punch up in Britain.

I understand what you're saying but it's a horrible mindset to have. What's the next option - Kevlar becomes everyday fashion walking down the street?

If you have a hammer, everything begins to start looking like a nail...
