David Bentley announces retirement

he certainly seemed to either refuse to admit he had depression, or just didn't fancy it out there anymore, either way I don't think he did himself any favours, the human minds a tricky thing though, and you can seemingly have everything going for you from an outside perspective and still fall apart, people seem very very quick to judge

I got the impression that Trott wanted to convince everyone it wasn't depression due to the stigma. I don't know that and don't want to judge the bloke but going by that interview he seemed to want to disassociate himself with the illness. The fact his first comeback failed maybe showed it wasn't just exhaustion.

There does seem to be something like that in it, its a shame because he lost some of the good will going down that road rightly or wrongly, as you say his come back being a repeat incident probably shows it was more serious than exhaustion

Maybe he just doesn't like football any more.

Good on him, I say. Could easily still collect a big wage compared to the average man but would rather not bother doing something he dislikes.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have any proof that Bentley suffers from depression? Not read it anywhere.

No, nothing has come out, personally I haven't used the D word about him, I think it's more pressure and falling out of love with the game.

As someone who has recently had the same happen, I can understand where he's coming from, and I just play for the local club!

Michael Johnson went the same way (midfielder at City), Rooney went hell for leather at the all you can eat buffet two summers ago (not needing brass house references here please).

Heard a cracking line from the Tennis recently..."It's hard to get out of bed at 5am when you are wearing silk pyjamas"

Players make bad moves, bad agents, bad injuries, bad women. This is the start of a phenomenon we will see a lot more of. The pressure and the expectation especially on the media hyped home grown players will ultimately lead to more drop outs in the dwindling numbers of players that are making it through just to have a chance of dropping out.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

think they may have been marvin hagler originally, great line like

He's got young kids, not played for a year and before that was in russia.

Seems like they didnt fancy russia and due to the kids they wanted back to england. No one came in at the level or wages he wanted for a year and so hes given up to go into business.

Worth millions now.

The goal he scored against Woolwich will stay with me forever.
When he signed for Spurs he thought he had 'made it' & he became unprofessional. Partied very hard with all that entails.

Shame.

He was in that England's shitest team that just came out on BBC3. He got some stick, I have a feeling that tipted him over the edge
