To put things into perspective we have a military service roughly the same size as Malaysia or Venezuela in terms of personnel yet still have the worlds 4th largest military budget, yet can't adequately supply our troops in Afghanistan with the correct equipment.

Because the MOD supply chain is ridiculously inefficient mostly I think.

The MoD civil service is huge and incompetent, but also our equipment in terms of planes, ships is first class but it costs a huge amount. Cutting our forces today is stupid because it saves on the salary of soldiers who are paid buttons, but does not reduce the cost of equipment provision or the massive pensions of pencil pushers.....

I guess the point is as ever, the guys on the ground in the greatest danger do their utmost to follow instructions from their commanders and officers yet the senior ranks, the civil service and the politicians spectacularly fail in their management, administrative and policy roles.
