Anyone done a custom build of their own on a motorbike, or bought something decent ready-customised?

Keen to do one from scratch into a road Scrambler or cafe racer and interested to see how anyone else who has done one made the donor bike choice and started the project?

I stripped the engine and most of its mechanical parts and replaced them with a pedal and chain pulley type mechanism

i kind of want to get a motorcycle, im a bit of an adrenaline junkie

is the transition from driving cars to motorcycles going to be difficult?

will i need a lot of lessons before taking my motorcycle test?

am i right in thinking the law states that you can only drive a motorcycle with a specific engine size within the first year or so after passing?

Very nice, where did you have it done?
Aaah, bit of a list of pros really. From previous experience,if you want proper reliability use people who
are specialists, but you knew that already.

This guy has been doing Airheads for donkeys and may provide inspiration.

Cheers....was reading about Kevills in Built magazine last year....nice stuff.
If you don’t mind me asking how much (ball park) did yours cost?

I had a mid-life ‘crisis’ two years ago. Made a bet while bladdered in Johannesburg along with 6 others that we’d learn to ride a motorbike within 12 months then go “on tour” with the three fellas who’d been bikers for years. I went out with another mate a few weeks later who’s always had bikes just for a look-see. Mrs said as I went out the door “ do not not buy a motorbike”. Guess what I came home with...a paid order for a Ducati Scrambler Full Throttle.
It dawned on me that I’d best get some lessons and get them quick. So, I did my CBT, CBT+, then the Theory (twice,) then Parts 1 and 2 of the test and hey presto I was legal.
Been a car driver over 30 years but it’s most definitely more than a transition!
Out of the six of us I was the only one who carried through the bet. Did our tour in November....4 days in Arizona around the Grand Canyon....1200 Miles and a baptism of fire.

Take plenty of lessons in all conditions, don’t try and rush it. Might be sensible not to go straight for a 750cc like me though!

Funnily enough my bike is an original JDM Honda CL400, production ceased in 2002. However the chinese build a copy, sold in the uk by MashMotorcycles. Down and Out Customs do a custom job on it. 6 grand and brand new.

Mash-0008.webp

The engine is derived from the Honda XR400 enduro bike and is a sweet torquey single. Thumpers make great street bikes.
