I realise that most of you probably won't give a damn about the following, but I'm in desperate need of letting of some steam, so here's the story anyway.
Once again, my hometown club Fortuna Sittard, is facing a very uncertain future. We're in a midst of a relegation battle, that could see us lose our Dutch League status. Would be a disaster for a club the size of Fortuna, who, although been plagued by all sorts of disasters over the last decade or so (mismanagement, relegation, near bankruptcies, mergers, pro licence taken away etc...etc...) are still very much one of the biggest clubs in the first division). Sparta Rotterdam being the only one, who's arguably bigger than us. It has been one hell of a bumpy ride for the last twelve years or so. A time in which my love for them has only grown, if anything. With Friday as a matchday, I still only missed about 6-7 away games over these 10 seasons in the basement of Dutch pro footy.
Anyway, we go into the final 2 games of the season, being 1 point ahead of bottom team Almere City and 1 point behind RBC Roosendaal (although I'm expecting some good news regarding them -for us anyway- on Wednesday. Before this weekend we had a four point cushion on Almere and were level on points with RBC Roosendaal, but this weekend results hit us hard. Almere City won 4-0 at home against Helmond Sport and RBC came back from being 2-0 down, to claim a point. We squandered a 1-0 halftime lead away to Cambuur Leeuwarden to end up losing 2-1.
So, here we are, 2 games from the end. Next up, is coming Friday against Almere City at their place. A win and it's party time, we'll be staying up. Anything less, and I fear we're in big trouble. RBC play way at co-leaders RKC Waalwijk, so they will probably and hopefully get stuffed. The final week of the season, is the one I fear the most. We'll be at home against RKC Waalwijk, who could clinch the title at our place. Luckily Almere City and RBC both meet teams, who got it all to play for also. Almere away to Den Bosch and RBC at home to Dordrecht, with both of these teams, locked in a battle for the final place in the First Division promotion play-offs.
Nothing as tense as a relegation battle, hey? Unbelievable nervous here.
