I sometimes think the top compilers deliberately make their clues so much harder to solve so they can make solving cryptics an elitist thing.
I tend to do them on short journeys or tea breaks,so stick to the quicker clue type,if I finish it before time then I have a look at the cryptic ones,as somebody mentioned if you do a crossword with both types of clue it does help to get into that puzzle solving,I rarely have newspapers nowdays so tend not to do them

Yes, it was me who mentioned it because it's how I learned. Even now it's sometimes difficult to see which end of the clue the definition is. I usually look for the anagram clues first because they're easier to spot.
