Alright, so I'm spending 90 days backpacking throughout Europe this summer. A friend of mine will be with me for 30 days so I've got that planned out to get him to all the major cities he wants to see.

I find myself with 15 days remaining in my trip and having to get from Zagreb to Belgrade.

Now, I'm thinking of going along the coast in Croatia from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, bus to Sarajevo and then bus to Belgrade from there.

It seems like people on here have been to this part of the world and I'm looking for recommendations on where to go in Croatia or an alternative route you'd recommend.

Immediately proceeding Zagreb I'll be spending 1 week in Budapest and 1 week in Vienna

Unfortunately, my experience in Croatia was essentially limited to the Zagreb train station. Sarajevo, however, was ace when I went there a few years back- especially in the 'old town' part of the city. I would advise you to eat loads of Burek and Cevapi whenever you have the opportunity.

Two or three days in Dubrovnik and then in Budapest should let you see everything. Statue Park in Budapest was a strange experience.

There are so many music festivals in Croatia this summer, see if your travels coincide with any. Off the top of my head there's;
Hideout
Garden Festival
Outlook
Dimensions
Ultra
Unknown

But im sure there's more.

Can I interest you in information on Prague, krakow or Riga?

I haven't been to Croatia.

I'll be in Prague for a week in July and don't think I'll be getting into Poland much, probably a short day or two after a week in Berlin.

Cheers I'll be in Budapest for a week and then have 11 days to move from Zagreb to Sarajevo, because I'll be flying from Belgrade to Istanbul where I'll be for 4 months.

Which week in July? You might want to swing west from Prague and visit Karlovy Vary. It's quite a nice place (big Russian influence though), and has a good film festival in July.

That's a shame, I'll be in Brussels at the time. Not in Prague til the last week.

On another note, day- 2 day trips from major cities in the area would be very welcomed information. Doing all the research as well, but personal anecdotes and recommendations from sound people always help quite a bit. Got Brussels settled though, getting everywhere in Belgium and The Netherlands sorted.

This is personal preference of course, but it can get incredibly hot in Czech during the summer, so personally I prefer getting out of big cities if possible.

For instance, Liberec is an hour from Prague by bus and you can be in the Jizera mountains in no time. There are a few nice lakes around that area if you wanted a dip to cool off, or you've got Jested, from which you have some nice views into Germany and Poland.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Any place like that that can offer something different from the major cities. Cheers Bruce
