Reidy's Bottle Of Grecian

The Unobstructed View
Apparently CRB checks for those working with children and vulnerable adults, are to be scrapped.

Is this not just leaving them open to the people that the checks are in place to protect them from ?

Hang on, what? not checking if potential criminals have a record, whilst they apply for jobs to work with the vunerable and children?

WHAT? SERIOUSLY?

Its a f..king joke reidy this country has gone to pot so say are kids are at school or local youth club we dont know who looking after them its a joke mate..

I know mate, there have been downsides to the checks, as with all things.

i.e. Local school had a bust lock (outside door, computer room and music room) it had to be fixed, now they rang me to just sort it asap, only cos I know the secretary, in reality they should've done a crb check before allowing anyone near the job, but it had to be done before school finished for the day and a check would need to be posted off. A quicker way of checking would be a solution, i.e. online or on the phone to get the result with paperwork to follow.

Thing with the crb though is it is only valid on the day it is issued and to the person who applies for it, so if they had done it and then the other school wanted me they would have to apply for another one. If we were able to get clearance ourselves and then it could be checked out online by whoever needs it then it would be better, as any convictions would be flagged on it. That said, the gov would probably want about 500 knicker off me for the clearance.

It will be another case where I.D. Cards are vaunted as being the alternative solution to this any many other things I reckon.

there are some other things to be scrapped as well. Including the 'harvesting' of the nations DNA, meaning that the Scuffers can't keep pulling all the kids in and taking their DNA and putting it on the database.

A vetting scheme that would have targeted more than nine million adults will be scrapped as the Government seeks to end a "13-year assault on hard-won British freedoms", Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said.

Only those working most closely with children or vulnerable adults will need to undergo a criminal records check and the results will be able to move with individuals when they change jobs, cutting down on bureaucracy, the Government said.

The current system will be "scaled back to sensible levels whilst at the same time protecting vulnerable people", Mr Clegg said.

The changes, outlined in the Protection of Freedoms Bill, aim to scale back state powers and reverse what has been seen as the widespread erosion of civil liberties in recent years.

More than nine million people working or volunteering with children and vulnerable adults will be freed from the need to register and be monitored by the state following an overhaul of the checking regime, the Government said. Rules covering the storage of innocent people's DNA will be tightened, with DNA profiles of those who have not been convicted only being held if they have been charged with a serious crime, and then only for three years.

Powers for local authorities to snoop on people suspected of minor offences will also be cut, preventing town hall snoopers from checking bins or using anti-terror powers in school catchment area disputes.

The Bill will also set out plans to regulate CCTV and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems for the first time, to outlaw wheel-clamping on private land, and to ban schools from fingerprinting children without their parents' consent. It will also contain plans to make it possible for those with old convictions for consensual gay sex to apply for their record to be deleted from the police national computer.

Daniel Hamilton, from campaign group Big Brother Watch, welcomed the announcement as a "real victory for common sense".

He said: "It's scandalous that so many members of the public have been forced to undergo these intrusive and humiliating criminal records checks.

"On the DNA database, however, the bill doesn't go far enough. While today's announcement will see a ban on collecting the DNA of those arrested and not convicted of crimes today, the details of more than 1.1 million innocent people will remain on the Police database. Their records must be deleted."

As someone who has experience with working in a Local Authority organisation that deals with CRB, I find this news very distressing.

As I dropped out of college way early last year the Job Centre saw it as a good idea for me to work in Administration so that I have a taste of it, I ended up working 5 days a week 9 hours a day at a Teachers Training Centre that taught new Teachers how to deal with pupils with special needs. On numerous occaisions CRB checks were made and it flushed out convicted sex offenders.

Now why for the love of god would we get rid of this?

Cos the previous gov. introduced it, a case of the coalition saying "look how much of your money is being wasted, and how many of you are affected."

The scheme no doubt has problems and downsides, and probably needs a revamp, but if doing so puts kids at risk then keep it as it is. A childs life does not have a price.

They're NOT scrapping CRB's. They're simply narrowing the need for one to those who deal directly with vulnerable groups, including children.

Makes complete sense. They're only talking about bureaucratic nonsense like when doctors work at another hospital for a week and need a CRB check etc.

they ARE scrapping them for a great many that currently need to get them.

i.e. tradesmen that are working in a school won't now need them, they could be there for weeks unchecked, but as they are not deemed to be in close proximity to the kids they don't need a crb.

But CRB checks have little or nothing to do with keeping pedophiles away from children.

In fact the vast majority of pedophiles have not committed a crime in their lives and suddenly strike at a later point in their lives.

CRB checks simply promote complacency in regards to common sense safety measures around children, such as always have adults working in pairs when watching children. If people relied solely on CRB checks then pedophiles would be delighted.

The only need for a CRB check is when someone is working on a one-on-one basis with a child or group of children, and even then the check is combined with a multitude of other measures to screen the person. Same with the elderly and disabled.

The vast majority of people who abuse children are known to the family, i work in child protection so see it all the time. the CRB was a classic government scam to make it look like they were doing something about a tabloid bogey man. If you wanted to make a real difference in child protection, take the vast sums of money used up by the CRB process and invest it in child protection services or invest it in investigating child pornography, trafficking or child sex workers.

Anyway, I don't think it's the CRB thing that's getting scrapped, isn't it that other "vulnerable people" database they were planning on setting up?

Paedophiles are probably the sneakiest of criminals and do anything to stay under the radar.
