Crayfish

Do you weird Britons, who think that Crayfish only populate rivers flowing south, catch and eat the little fellas?

I might go try to catch some next weekend.

Yes. Have been out fishing for them many a time. You can pretty much pick them out of the river. We have an abundance of alien American crayfish in our rivers that are out-competing our native species so the authorities pretty much encourage people to go and catch them. They are a free, tasty, abundant and easily caught source of food. Taste rather like langoustine.

I would recommend anyone go fishing for them.

Be certain they are the American ones though as I believe that the native ones are protected, with enormous fines.

This is true. Pretty easy to tell the difference. The American ones are quite a bit bigger and a different colour.

Devil Crayfish lightly heated in some garlic butter and chilli... little squeeze of lemon... and spread over some thick toasted Ciabatta, served with a cold glass of Chateau Malartic... best lunch in the summer months!
