Could the USA bid for the 2026 World Cup? (Guardian article)

How sad that a country that has only recently taken up proper football on a national level, could potentially have had more world cups than ourselves.

Mexico have had more than us as well like

Bit of shambles we've only had one when we invented the game

Blame it on the old system of selection where if a continent hosted a World Cup it couldn't have one there for another 12 years.

Now that that's over, wouldn't be surprised to A. See a lot more World Cups in Europe and B. For England to get one in the relatively near future.

Which I'm fine with. The majority of countries that could host a World Cup without it being a crippling expense are in Europe.

Canada would be a tricky World Cup. They really don't have the sporting infrastructure already. The only stadium that meets the standards for quarterfinals and beyond today is Olympic Stadium in Montreal, and there are only 4 stadiums total that meet the standards for group stage matches.

Yeah, but I don't forsee them struggling to set the infrastructure up in the way that Brazil did for instance

It's feasible IMO, and I reckon people will turn out for it. Even if they don't, I'm sure a shedload of Yanks will also show up to flesh out the attendances

Sod it, even have some matches in Detroit if need be. It's close enough to the border

I would go to any World Cup that I could just get in the car and drive to. For me it's a 10 hour drive to Toronto, 14 to Ottawa, and 16 to Montreal. Count me in.

True. And most of the new stadiums they'd build for it could be re-purposed pretty well for the Canadian Football League.

The only thing that I could see impeding it would be political will. I just wonder if there will be a minor revolt among the populace after watching the last 3 World Cups and their (likely) outcomes, especially since most of the country couldn't be arsed about the sport anyway.

Canada just hosted the Women's World Cup on fake grass.

There's that, too. The part that bothered me the most about that is that it's really not that hard to put in grass as long as you're willing to pay for it. Remember in 1994 when we hosted matches in the Silverdome? Hell, we even put down grass for our World Cup Qualifiers and our joke of a continental tournament here.

Well, if Canada hosted the WC, they'd actually qualify.

US is an obvious great host. Actually made money last time. No host has since. Have infrastructure, the sport is exploding here. Easy to get to.

So we'll get passed over for North Korea.
