Cost of fitted brake pads and discs

I've got an old VW golf MK2 that needs new front brake pads and discs. I've been quoted £160 seems loads to me. Anyone let me know if this is decent price?

Most of that is labor costs surely. I did rear pads on Mrs Nigh’s van yesterday and the pads were cheap but I had to buy a floor jack, which isn’t. (I also added a torque wrench.)

If you know what you’re doing, you can do it in less than an hour. With a helper and YouTube, same. But that’s probably a reasonable price for that.

I watched him do it. Had to get them sorted today. I imagine it would have taken me all day but know how to do it in future. Cheers for help

Non-genuine front discs will be about £28-£30 each, non genuine front pads will be about £25-£30, and then you might need sensors, usually about £5-£6 each, so maybe £80-£100 for the parts, plus the labour... £160 is probably not too bad.

The origin of the parts is something I'd ask about, there's a lot of poor quality parts in the marketplace these days.

I've replaced pads/disks/calipers in the past and usually it is one screw and 2 bolts, however you are messing with a crucial bit of the car and for the want of £60 odd labour it might be more sensible to let a professional do it. All it takes is a bit of force in the wrong way and you may do something to the brake lines you may later regret. They may also bleed the brakes at the same time giving it a boost to how it feels.

Look for a nearby industrial estate for a small garage onsite their overheads are usually lower than an high street garage - I experienced this when to back wheel arches need welding on my old Astra needed doing garages wanted £130-140 guy on an industrial estate found on the net nearby did a great job for £70- the mot centre who failed it passed comment on what a great sold job he had done - he would have done it fo £60 without s receipt, but with it being a safety job I paid the extra tennner!
He even bitumen it to which was extra at the other garages - go online an telephone around he may get you the parts wholesale too!
