I'm talking about the players who are generally talked about in their later role. Though you do have cases like John Charles who apparently played equally (and superbly) well at centre forward or centre half.
Mostly they seem to be a kind of natural change. Juan Fran at Atletico springs to mind in that he started out as a winger and has been converted to a fullback. In the modern game that doesn't seem such a drastic change.
Ray Kennedy was a striker for Arsenal but became one of the most consistant midfielders in the country for the rs. And that was back in the days when the roles were much more clearly defined.
