I also have a 1Tb plugged into mine via usb, the hard drives need to be ones with their own power supply I think (may be wrong) and on my Sony all formats wont play, the Tv can also play music files and display pics off the drive as well.

More than likely, should say in the owners manual. And yes, file formats can be a stickler, especially with what he's wanting to do. If it's not supported in the firmware you're SOL unless they decide to update it.

Mine doesn't have a power supply mate, just plugs in to the USB, ordinary Toshiba basics HDD like
