Aye guys.

So I'm applying for university exchange for the second half of next year and at the moment my two most likely choices are Berlin School of Economics or Lancaster University.

Just a few questions from a somewhat clueless Aussie. If I move to Lancaster, i'd obviously want to get to see as much everton games as I possibly can. I know Lancaster isn't that far from Liverpool, but cost wise, how much would it be catching a train down, and what would ticket prices generally be like against mid table opposition. I'm only concerned because I'm going to be living on a tight budget so taking into consideration every cent from now will make a huge difference. Also, how difficult would it be for me to get tickets to an away game sitting with Everton supporters?

Also, just some other general questions;
Where would the closest major airport be, Liverpool or Manchester?
In terms of cost of living, is getting around on public transport in general going to hit my pocket hard?
What are your general thoughts on Lancaster; it really doesn't look too appealing, but the university allows me to knock off some units towards my degree.
Finally; If I go to Berlin, if I wanted to fly over for a few games, would flights be cheap and hassle free?

Sorry for my cluelessness, I've done my research into a lot of things, but some things just can't be answered unless you ask the right people.

Cheers in advance :)

To be honest, I don't have much say; they're both my top couple of preferences, so wherever I get accepted is where they send me.

I would say go to Berlin too, but understand what you said about going where you get sent.
If you wanted to fly to Liverpool for Everton games, then Easyjet do a Berlin - Liverpool connection and it's usually very cheap.

Berlin's fkn boss though, best city in Germany in my opinion, apart from Hamburg.

And maybe Cologne.

no wait, Berlin's better than Cologne.

I went for a research post interview there once mate. I was delighted I didn't get it, tbh. The place is a concrete modernist nightmare out in the wilderness. A real depressing place.

Not getting much help mate! If you are on a tight budget, then flying from Berlin for games seems a bit much, TBH. Admire the commitment though. They probably speak better english in Berlin than Lancaster though.

BTW, saw an aussie comedian last week, Steve Hughes. Brilliant. Heard of him?

From the people I know who went to Lancaster, they've all said, 'its alright'. Not the stellar sort of review I'd expect from my prospective uni. Couldn't tell you about prices too much mate, in as much as the north is much cheaper than the south, so it shouldn't hit your pocket too hard.

You'd have thought David Bowie and Brian Eno had made some records there, in fact.

But, in all seriousness - go to Berlin. Everyone I've ever known who's been there says it is one of the coolest places in the world and you can fly to Liverpool airport for £60-£70 return if you book far enough in advance.

For UK train tickets use www.thetrainline.com/ Looks like an open return Lancaster to Liverpool is about £16, takes an hour and a half and you have to change once at Wigan (at least you can get a pie).
I think one off ticket prices are still £37 quid for most league games.

I don't think this would be too difficult, you'd just have to do it in advance when the tickets were released on the official site.

Where would the closest major airport be, Liverpool or Manchester?

Lancaster to Liverpool Airport - 68.3 mi, 1 hour 17 mins. Lancaster to Manchester Airport - 60.6 mi, 1 hour 8 mins. From Google maps

It's moderate to expensive. If you're under 25 you might be able to get a railcard for £26 pounds, which gets you 30% off your rail fares. Or 1/3 I can't remember.

Finally; If I go to Berlin, if I wanted to fly over for a few games, would flights be cheap and hassle free?

Easyjet do this route from Liverpool and it's frequent. If you do it ahead of time you may get a return for about £50 I THINK. But later it rises to £120 something. www.skyscanner.net Manchester will have plenty of flights there regular

Ok lad?

That's Liverpool, right?

Just a minute lads, he's from OZ. It will be a big step up for him going to Lancaster ( they have old buildings and pubs ), Berlin could blow his mind and it's full of Germans and we all know what they did to our chippies.........
