Collision in the North Sea

The US flag tanker Stena Immaculate was anchored off the River Humber when she was hit by the Portuguese flag container ship Solong on passage from Falkirk to Rotterdam. The Solong was doing 16 knots when she hit the tanker midships. The tanker caught fire and the crews abandoned both ships. One man reported missing from Solong, fire fighting tugs attending from the Humber.

At least for the crews sake the north sea isn't at its worst when they ditched.

16 knots is a fair lick as you know Kevin. Footage looks horrific.

32 casualties brought ashore.
I'm not sure what's on both ships, because fire seems to have ravaged the container ship really really fast.

Was it foggy or difficult wind conditions? Could the anchored ship have moved suddenly or was the container pilot a few sherry's in? Jumping ship is serious stuff, and it looks like there is no saving the ships. Got to pump all that oil off as quick and safe as they can. News suggesting a head on collision.

It wasn't a head on collision. The tanker was at anchor and the container ship was doing 16 knots when she hit the tanker midships, which suggests that whoever was on watch on the container ship was neglecting to look out of the window/neglecting to look at the radar/fell asleep/had left the bridge for some reason, or abducted by aliens

You do wonder how much all these accidents and wars that happen around the globe take its toll. Pollution in the ocean and pollution in the air just seems such a common occurrence.

They don't do anything, don't worry. I have a reliable source in Tipperary that tells me we can pour whatever we want into the rivers and oceans, pump whatever we want into the sky and plunder all of the infinite resources of earth and it has absolutely no effect

I understand that the tanker was carrying jet fuel which is essentially kerosene and is non-persistent, although toxic to wildlife (a bit like wind turbines!)

You would be amazed at the amount of crude oil that enters the oceans naturally from cracks in the sea floor.

Are you sure they are from Tipperary and not Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC?

I've seen it reported that the tanker is one of just 10 that the US uses to supply its overseas military with fuel.

If that's the case, unbelievable that it could be taken down so easily.
