You just use a formula that fits your own agenda. That's what everyone else does.
Because of this thread, https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/villa-everton.94993/, i am going to ask you, can there be an equation or formula that can precisely calculate the size of one club and be used to determine the correct order of clubs in regard to their size?
Sake.Talksport did a fairly decent article on this a while back that probably summarises it best, I'm not their biggest fan but I think they pretty much nailed it.

One things for sure, if it had anything to do with support and the behaviour of those supporters we'd be right up there with the best of them, the one thing that always makes me proud to be a blue.Size - biggest factors have to be
Are you a founder (+10) or a Johnny come lately? (1 minus 1 for every year it took you to realise togger was good)
+1How many years you've been in the top league
-1 for every year you've been in the 2nd division
-2 for third division and so on.
+10 for every league title
+9 for every FA Cup
+1 for league runner up
+3 for European cup win (a Johnny come lately competition not open to earlier clubs, therefore lower weighted despite its size)
+2 for uefa & cup winners cup
+2 for league cup win
+1 for every innovation innovation or first in your history
-1 for every year since your last win in a competition (ouch)
+1 for each 10k fans you fill on average this current season
No idea how this would pan out for us, but I'd love for someone with a database handy to run it out on a spreadsheet.

I could go with those suggestions, although historically (before sky) the fa cup has always been a massive achievement, hence my higher weighting. Could even tweak each factor to maximise Evertons score! All we need is an enormous database. Not a bad effort, I think that the FA Cup should be worth half a league title so around 5 is about right. Also just cause you haven't won anything in years doesn't mean you are a bigger club, Leicester have 0 points deducted but Newcastle will have 62 points taken away! ...or 6 league titles and a league cup
Perhaps .25 for every year without a trophy would be better? That way you still give some weighting to recent success.
