I used to think that but it's because with a broken leg they'd have to lie down for months which would sent them mental and give them intestinal diseases. It's the same with all horses not just racing ones.

Didn't know that. You'd have thought there could be something they can do.

Yeh its a big shame, but other than put them through months of discomfort (and often complications) there's nothing you do. I have a friend who owned a horse, who got spooked in its stable one night and went mental trying to get out, they can do serious damage to themselves, and this one sadly broke its leg and they had to put it down. Terrible.

There was a famous racehorse in America a couple years ago who broke his leg just running at the end of a race. They put off putting him down, hoping that they could mend it and keep him 'sane' at the same time. Had him in one of those giant slings fat people use to get in the pool. But over a period of months his wounds got infected and then he started having problems in his other leg due to the inbalance, and eventually they had to put him down anyway. Was pretty sad. :(
