Claiming Political Asylum

For those who know, is it possible that I can do this on the basis of my government being in complete chaos?

Imagine you make a new life for yourself, you start to feel safe and even start thinking about moving your family over to be with you. Then one morning you wake up and find a spider has had the nerve to crawl out of the floorboards and stroll around the place, it breaks my heart to think you'd go through something like that.

All the best mate x

A Brit not wanting to leave Vietnam.

It's actually quite easy to stay there. Quick google brought me to this (link below); loads of pointers there - better to ask your question there. You can even take a tourist visum; go out of the country, go in again take a new one etc... There seem to be offices there that can help you with that for little money.

I don't know staying there is wise though; you'll probably end up teaching English.

Sounds right. I know an older couple who've live in China about 20 years. They renew their visas by taking trips every so often (even single night stays in Hong Kong before returning). Seems like this is easier than going the asylum route.

Similar in parts of Africa too.
Ex-pats in Ghana for example go for an overnight stay to Togo in order to extend their visa upon return.
