The French international footballer Karim Benzema has been placed under formal judicial investigation in connection with an alleged attempt to blackmail a fellow footballer over a sex-tape. A statement from the Versailles prosecutor said the alleged crime of conspiracy to blackmail and participating in a criminal group for which he was being investigated could carry a prison sentence of at least five years.

Benzema’s lawyer Sylvain Cormier, told reporters after a hearing that Benzema was innocent and took no part in any blackmail. “He played no part, I repeat no part, in any blackmail or attempted blackmail,” Cormier said.

The prosecutor’s move to place Benzema under formal investigation — which in the French justice system does not confirm wrongdoing but means investigators have serious grounds for pursuing the matter — exposes Benzema to a lengthy period of doubt before the European Championship finals that France hosts next year. Investigators will now have to determine whether Benzema played a role in the alleged extortion attempt against the France and Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape. Benzema was also placed under judicial supervision, meaning he cannot meet with the victim or other people charged in the case.

The Real Madrid striker admitted involvement in the alleged extortion case, telling investigators he approached the fellow footballer about the tape on behalf of “a childhood friend” but claims he did not think he was harming the other player.
A source close to the investigation told AFP that Benzema had admitted while he was in custody that he had spoken to the player who was the alleged target of the sex tape. "Karim Benzema has admitted speaking to [him] at the request of a childhood friend, who was approached by three blackmailers who were in possession of the sex tape,” the source told AFP.
“Benzema said he had agreed with his childhood friend on what he should say so that his team-mate would negotiate exclusively with him.”

According to L’Equipe’s transcript of the leaked 20-minute phone call, Benzema tried to convince Valbuena to deal directly with a friend of his over the sex tape. In the call, Benzema is said to tell his friend about a conversation he had had with Valbuena. Benzema says he told Valbuena he was there to help and that if Valbuena wanted the video to be destroyed he should see “my friend in Lyon directly”

According to the transcript Benzema says in the call that he felt Valbuena thought it was all a joke. “I don’t think he’s taking us seriously,” Benzema said. When Valbuena had asked if his tattoos could be seen in the video, Benzema had told him: “You can see everything.” He says Valbuena at one point seemed panicked and went white. He says he had told him: “Anyway, do what you want, if you don’t want to pay, it’s your life, but I warned you.”

His lawyer Cormier has maintained that Benzema was not involved and that he had tried to dissuade Valbuena from negotiating with the suspects. Benzema has been ordered to not make contact with others linked to the affair.

I meant Ched Evans style, as in when his time has been served.

Bayern will not get anyone as deadly as Lewandowski so unless they're offered ridiculous money it should be a none starter.

The wealthy never spend that much time in prison,if any at all,no matter how bent they are. Expect him to serve a minimal period if found guilty or the mate to take the fall completely. He'll still be tainted goods though. But if it means he's cheap,no one will care.
Adams,Gazza,Gerard,Deeney,Marlon King,Lee Hughes the list would be endless if I could remember all of them. If the are good,their wrongdoings are quickly granted. Probably shouldn't include Adams and on that list,he's the only one that showed contrition and spent the rest of his career and life trying to make amends and help others.

Before anyone asks,yes I would take him.

If the French legal system has finished with him,then he's finished served the required time or been let off,nothing to stop him from playing for us. He's a couple of steps up from Giroud and probably only equalled in this league by Aguero.

Aye, would expect his lawyer to be able to get any sentence reduced to just a fine/probation.

Going to be interesting to see how France handle it as any trial is unlikely to be resolved before the Euros, makes the tension between Rio and John Terry seem positively mild in comparison!

Benzema has been suspended indefinitely from the France national team over the sex tape blackmail case involving his team-mate Mathieu Valbuena. The French football federation president, Noël Le Graët, said the striker would remain suspended until the case was resolved, calling it a “heartbreaking” decision.

“I have decided, it is a decision from the president of the French federation and not from the executive committee or the ethics committee,” Le Graët told a press conference. “As long as the judicial system has not decided that everything that has been published is excessive, the federation will not change its mind.”
Le Graet was not specific but his ruling appears to mean Benzema cannot be called up by the national team until he is convicted or cleared of the alleged offence, meaning he could miss Euro 2016 which is being hosted by France.
