Please don’t turn this into some mad religious thread… it’s just a general question.

I texted a mate earlier to see how he’s doing as he’s recovering from a recent operation. He told me he’s on the mend and was able to go to church this morning with the assistance of his sister who drove him there. Now, we’ve been friends for almost 35 years and I’ve never known him to go to church before but in conversation he told me he’s been going to church 2 or 3 times a week for the past 3 months. He has had recent struggles with depression and alcohol but said he finds inner peace and comfort when he’s at church and hasn’t felt the need for alcohol at all. So, my question really is do you go to church ? Do any of your friends or family go to church and do you think it’s a place where you can find some level of peace and happiness?

Good to hear your friend has found some solace.
I don't believe in any religion or higher being, so I find my release in nature however I do really enjoy visiting religious buildings.

I too love visiting religious buildings … when I’m abroad o make a point of visiting the churches and monasteries purely from an aesthetic view point rather than religious, but whilst in Kefalonia last September I witnessed something very special inside a church I was visiting which was extremely moving and I will never forget. But religion ain’t my thing.

We drove 7 miles to our nearest supermarket yesterday to get the 4 ingredients for a pudding Mrs Chrismpw was making for her sister's birthday. When we got back she realised she had overlooked the mascarpone she needed. (Ffs).

Determined not to do a 14 mile round trip for a pot of cream cheese, I got on my bike and cycled in the sunshine, without a coat, to the local corner stores. Soon after the heavens opened and hail bombarded me.

I sheltered in the porch of our local c of e church*. I found solace. Does that count?

*am now expecting an invoice for the collection plate so they can renovate the roof, or whatever the perennial excuse is.

You could give something.
I always buy a Coke when I use the toilet in a MacDonald's. Which when I think of it now is a bit of a vicious circle.

Definitely…. If it helps him find the peace he’s after then it’s all good
Exactly. People do not have to believe in a deity or specific traditions/rituals or whatnot, but if it aids someone, then it's a positive for me. Horses for courses.

On a personal level, I often do feel better once I've been to mass, but it's hard to explain how or why. Perhaps it is the direction, the guidance or the fraternity.
