You can get 10 days off this Christmas and use up just three days of annual leave
With the sun periodically shining, it might feel a little premature to start discussing the festive season but, when it comes to Christmas time, it pays to plan time off work as early as possible.

The good news is that, because of when Christmas Day falls this year, with just three days' annual leave, you can bag yourself a 10-day stretch off work.

You better move quickly though, as the word will be spreading fast around the workplace. If you want to be able to relax for 10 consecutive days over the yuletide then simply book off December 27, 28 and 29. Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday and Christmas Day is a Monday.

That means Boxing Day is a Tuesday and New Year's Day is a Monday, so you will only have to return to work on Tuesday, January 2.

So there's no confusion, our sister paper WalesOnline has broken it down:

Friday, December 22 - normal working day

Saturday, December 23 - weekend

Sunday, December 24 - Christmas Eve

Monday, December 25 - Christmas Day

Tuesday, December 26 - Boxing Day

Wednesday, December 27 - normal working day

Thursday, December 28 - normal working day

Friday, December 29 - normal working day

Saturday, December 30 - weekend

Sunday, December 31 - weekend

Monday, January 1 - New Year's Day

Tuesday, January 2 - Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go...

Of course, this strategy is pretty much useless if you work in some professions, such as in a shop or for the emergency services - or even for a newspaper!

And, if you have little or no wish to spend more time with your family over the festive season, just keep quiet. There probably won't be much to do between Christmas and New Year anyway. But, for some, this may be very good news.
