Mad how the Chinese can rock up to a city, create their own distinct district, name it Chinatown with all their own cultural iconography and architecture and everyone loves it.

Not many nations in the world that could manage that.


....mother-in-law is close on 90 and brought up off Duke St. The Chinese community in town is long established and she tells great stories of that area, particularly through the war years. Behind the houses opposite the pub (The Nook?) is a little alley way and she says how they used that area to kill the chickens. In the basements of the lovely houses in the square they grew the bean sprouts.

There was one in Duke Street, I think, called The Blue Orchid. It opened from midnight until about 5am. Quite often went there as an alternative to standing in a taxi queue after the clubs threw out. It was lovely- although my appreciation may have been hindered by not being sober.

You have no idea how much this thread has made me crave decent Chinese food. Durham is sadly lacking in good Chinese food. Note to self: next time I'm in Liverpool, visit Chinatown.

Yeah, ISIS town doesn't have the same ring to it........
