Never happen. China is set to dominate the 21st century, there's no way they'll jeopardise that by ruining trade relations with America and a lot of other major countries.

You're dead right...however they will continue to dominate, subdue, and illegally invade smaller regional nation states...The massive belters

you are right. BUT china is unpredictable and kind of crazy. so what we think is stupid, who knows what they think of it

Actually, Russia are more likely to go to war with China than we are. Just because of the Communist link does not make allies.

Russia, and in particular Siberia has an an abundance of what China need.....space and natural resources. And if the long rumored oil is there, even more reason for China to move North.

They've had a few army/navy stories on 60 mins lately, Australia buying new jets and new ships. We are actually getting some semi air craft carrier things.

China has made mind-blowing investments in its Navy. And according to more than a few defence experts, China’s firepower more than matches the United States. Ship for ship, China may not equal America – it certainly doesn’t have as many aircraft carriers – but its submarines and long-range missiles could easily cause the U.S Pacific Fleet some serious damage.

Err, no. What China did was buy a bunch of Russian Kilo calss subs (Diesel/Battery) which are used for coastal defense (littoral waters), they are in no way a power projecting force like the Nuclear subs. The Chinese Nuclear subs are archaic, loud, slow and ill-equipped. Even the first flight Los Angeles class subs of ours stands head and shoulders above the best the Chinese have. On top of that, the capabilities of the second flight LA's and the new Virginia class, our pacific sub force could pretty much wipe out the Chinese navy by itself, not even needing the assets deployed in the Gulf, Atlantic or Med.

China has no leg to stand on if it comes to a Naval battle. I just feel sorry for the needless casualties (ready for a contentious analogy...) of boys going up against gods, because in the Naval world, the United States are gods.

All that said, with all of this offensive power we have, we only use it when necessary, preferring to project power rather than actually use it.

Oz-land are interested in protecting their interests, and the first step in doing that is the Navy. The Collins class boats of yours are no slouches, but like the Kilo's they are limited to being effective only in littoral waters.

Semi-Aircraft carrier thingies are likely Amphib Ships. Very useful. The US Navy operates Marine Divisions out of our Amphibs that put 5000 marines on the ground, anywhere in the world in a couple of days. Plus they are self-sufficient for up to 30 days of operations before they need resupplying.

The Collins are the subs right? From what I understand they were a big flop cause they had a heap of problems with them, cost a heap of money to fix and I think they are trying to get rid of them now.

Yeah I'm pretty sure those amphib ships are what we are getting, they can push out vehicles out the front carrying troops that land on a beach.

I am sure they had material issues on the Collins. Most boats do. We had a whole class written off because they were too expensive to build and maintain (the Seawolf class stopped after 3 were produced). You have to understand the first of the class will always be riddled with bugs, it is the later boats that have less material issues due to all the bugs getting worked out.

If anything they are going the COTS route (Commerical Off-The Shelf)...the idea being using commercially available products certified for use in strenuous enviroments to reduce costs. That is the principle behind the Virginia (the problem being all the COTS stuff is custom made....kinda defeats the purpose).

And Amphibs are an awesome capability to add to your arsenal. Airlifting stuff is so expensive and restrictive, sea-power will always remain while there is water to float on.

Getting off topic abit here.....:)

What I really want Australia to get is those A10 Thunderbolt air craft, they are the ultimate in cool.

Love watching those when their firing those cannons at defenseless tanks on the battlefield. Then they finish 'em off with a Maverick missile.

I don't believe that we'll see any major wars like we had in WWI and WWII. I think most conflicts in the future will be more directed towards terrorism and terrorism sponsoring states. Those theaters will be regional in nature and fought solely with conventional weapons.
