China Earthquake

Awful. Just a point though. If this had happened in the US, you just know that we would now have 100% media coverage. Makes you think.

Mr the esk is currently in Wuhan which is over 700 miles east from the epicentre.

Everyone is expecting the total fatality figures to climb significantly as rescue teams reach the affected areas. One blessing is that it will not be as bad as the 2008 earthquake in the same region which killed more than 90,000 people.

Mind you that pails into insignificance against the 230,000 killed in Haiti.

I was living in Sofia last year and there was a 6.0 earthquake at around 3 am once. It woke everyone up, we had to go outside and there were thousands of people on the streets in the middle of the night. There were a couple of aftershocks of around 4.3-4.4 and we finally went back home 4 or 5 hours later, but no one slept obviously. Only one person died and only a few flat blocks suffered significant damage as buildings from the communist era are pretty sturdy there, but I had trouble sleeping for a couple of weeks after it, easily the scariest experience of my life. It still seems surreal when I think about it.

got some mates working there, hope they're okay. Also hope that the repercussions are not the same as the last one, landslides, floods etc which ended up killing more then the quake.

We HK people donated 230 millions HK dollars to the government up there back in 2008 due to the earthquake. Well it appears many of those sum were taken by corrupted officials (as expected). Some new buildings that were built by our money in 2008/2009 were badly damaged in this earthquake (apparently the core of the bricks were empty etc). They even knocked down newly built school after a year also and guess what they built apartments for sale!
