Microphones like in rugby is a superb shout. This, plus goal-line technology and a video referee is all that would ever be needed. We already have one of them (goal-line tech), microphones would take no time away from the game and prevent referees from talking favourable with any particular side, so it's really just the solution regarding a video referee that needs to be made.

If that stuff was in place, we'd have won at Chelsea, at least got to extra time against City but more likely gone through, and at least got a draw against Swansea.

Instead we have a point, a bitter cup defeat and yet another woeful home abomination.

If the referees would have microphones, there would be no/much less hounding of referees, no more Steven Gerrards encouraging the referee to change from a yellow to a red card, no more Guus Hiddink having a conversation about how many extra minutes he should add on, etc.

I think things such as handball calls would essentially remain at the discretion of the on-field referee, so could easily still be influenced ("I believe his arm was in an unnatural position" or "I felt he moved his arm towards the ball") - I believe the on-field referee will always be able to cheat and be affected by outside influences/money.

Good points. And timekeeping off the field too, like the air horn in Rugby League?

My take on this is that football in its history is the global working mans game , there is a reverence of cheating the system , getting one over on the authorities and hoodwinking , its oooked up to.
In many countries they see it as part of the game and if you can get away with it all the better , more fool the oppressive referee and the rule makers.

I think cheating is cheating and hate it but not everyone thinks like that.

Personally I thought Thierry ahenry shouldhave been decapitated vein by vein for his handball against Ireland.

I also think there is corruption in the game which will indirectly supporta cheating mentality on the pitch.
And like other posters said its impossible to retrospectively punish someone for what cam be argued was accidental.

Diving even as clear as it can look is difficult to prove as much as I would welcome it.

Cut out the time wasting , no substitutions allowed in injury time , standing in front of the ball , jostling and holding each other at corners and goalkeepers getting frees for nothing , book players for waving the yellow card gesture.
Bring in instant replay checking for offside when goals are scored

Then we can work onthe cheating but some of the above will help cut it down.

The players should do whatever they can to gain a professional advantage. The aim of the game is winning. I don't blame Sterling in the slightest for that.

It is up to the officials to put in place systems to effectively enforce the rules. If they don't enforce them, then anything and everything that can be done to gain a competitive advantage is fair game.

As an Irishman, I've mixed feelings about the Henry handball. I was annoyed at the time, but 1) it was so ridiculously clear that I find it astounding the ref missed it and 2) without that goal we'd still have had to face extra time and maybe pens. It also wasn't the last kick of the game, like Terry's goal, we had time to score.

Diving though, that's despicable. 2-3 game retrospective ban for me. It would soon become a thing of the past.

There may be scope for a difference of opinion about what "professional" means. Isn't it professional to play within the rules? By all means play to the boundary of the rules, but not over the line... :coffee:
