Champions League qualification - what's the benefit??

Bale wouldn't have cost Madrid what he did without the champions league exposure. Ultimately until we have a change at the top the biggest benefit of champions league football will be the premium it adds to the value of our players if/when we sell them

Money and Prestige really

You get 10 Million just for making the group stages don't you?

Then, if you do make the groups, you get to play gala fixtures with teams like Juventus, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich

So there's the financial bonus of qualifying for it, but also the thrill of playing the best teams in Europe

Boss away days to Turin and Barcelona. Everton's name in lights etc

People like Romalu Lukaku. Everyone realises that a single Champions League qualification won't transform us into Bayern Munich over night, it takes time to evolve, but the only way you are going to evolve into a bigger club is through playing in Europe's premier competition, there aren't any other ways to go about it.

The bit in bold is the reason for the thread's title, though.

I absolutely agree that the only way for us to step to the next level is by regularly qualifying for the CL. You say it takes time to evolve, and we can't do this by only qualifying as an isolated event.

Maybe my thread title should have been phrased better to say something like - what's the benefit in only qualifying once every 10 years? That's the question I'm asking.

The answer is 300-400 million. Over 10 years Arsenal have earned at least that more then us from constantly qualify from the CL.

I see what you're saying. All we need to do is buy Gareth Bale and we're a shoe in for the Quarterfinals. Let Bill know of your findings

And yet Everton have been extremely unlucky not to qualify for Europe's premier competition on two occasions within the last 10 years. I agree that those clubs have an advantage, and that we are at a disadvantage, but I don't agree that it is impossible.

If we had a bit more luck then we would have qualified twice in the last 10 years. I appreciate that we didn't and we haven't, but luck played its part in both 2005 and 2014.

Correct - Nothing in football is impossible (just look at Bournemouth) but every season it becomes less possible at the top of the football pyramid. Yeah we have had our fair share of lady luck deserting us.

You get the yo-yo clubs that go up and down from the premiership, and it feels like it is the same for European competitions. You get the likes of Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal who have become consistent in qualifying, but the rest yo-yo, qualify one year and then the toll of European football makes their league form suffer enough so they miss out the following season (like us this year). European football does seem a necessary evil, its good for revenue, attracting better players but does cost in league form, I guess we will have to go through a period of qualifying one year/ missing out the next until we are able to handle the demands of European football better - but I hate the missing out year!!
