CD’s/DVD’s

I went through a little phase of buying Criterion blu-rays last year. Got all the Wes Anderson ones and then felt like they were a bit too expensive, but they might actually have a bit of resale value and the product is considerably more thought about than just a regular release.

Yep, I do this but in photo-album books instead.
Huge space savers - and you keep the artwork and booklet.

The key is to recognise that the value of a CD or DVD is basically held in the disc itself - and perhaps in whatever booklet or inlay accompanies it. But the plastic boxes are the landfill that take up acres of domestic shelf space. Once you rid yourself of those, discs take up no real space (even if collected in photo-album books or wallets). Then it becomes possible to have thousands of discs with no real loss of space.

The only dvds I keep now are ones that I transferred from vhs tv recordings of my massive everton collection, as there is always a chance of playing discs in the future on various platforms whereas vhs tape playing is surely gone forever.
Some of my rare ones include our first away game of the 86/87 title season at Sheffield Weds and some from the TV blackout season of 85/86, just don't want to lose them as they are not on available YouTube either.

Still collect CDs. Nothing new though, charity shops, eBay joblots etc so they're pennies per album.

Leaving it to the fate of whatever is out there on a charity shop shelf or in a joblot rather than specifically buying/streaming albums has brought a lot of enjoyment. I found I would listen to the same stuff repeatedly on streaming.

Still collect BluRay as well as there's so much that simply isn't available on streaming and I can cobble together a little list on Amazon and it makes it easy for relatives to buy me a cheap gift that will be very appreciated come Xmas / birthdays.

A couple of years ago, while under the influence of alcohol, I bought about 700 VHS for £50. Sold them all on eBay individually over the course of a year and made enough for a family holiday. There's still a market for retro stuff like that but it's not to the levels of vinyl.

Tapes in the rental shop style big boxes go for a small fortune. Especially if they are pre-certification. Didn't have any of them in the job lot but opening a box and finding dozens upon dozens of Nicolas Cage faces from various films staring back at me was a wondrous moment.
