I was told it was because of the whip that they used on navy ships, which was called the cat o nine tales. “Cat got your tongue” meant “piped down now haven’t you” when they were either threatened with it or belted with it. Not sure though.

Makes sense but, not checking as it's a conclusion that seems ok.
 
I was told years ago it was in relation to punishments in the middle east, liars who were found guilty would have their tongues cut out and fed to the kings cats.

Thinking about it now, i'm sure its complete Bull
