There is a pop icon aura that surrounds many great athletes, t shirts are printed, bell ends get iPhone covers of them.

Some, I mean very few transcend their chosen field of specialism to impact generations.

i don't possess the wordsmith skills of those who can appropriately apportion the status they deserve, so i present my own in pics.

I've always enjoyed boxing, and have boxers in my family as some of you many know.

Ali, i believe is gravely ill, and i hate the fact people only note when someone important (to some, not all) pass without the dedication they deserve.

When I'm at a computer later, I'll post loads of the gifs and videos i have, one including the special ' anchor punch'.

The man is an utter legend. Some of his soundbites are superb.
Made white America have a long hard look at itself as well as ruling it in the ring.

Nice one Bryan mate.

I love Ali, love the aura around his fights and the passion he brought into the ring. Would have loved to have been around to watch him fight live.

Not called The Greatest for nothing. Will be a sad day when he goes.

Best athlete/sports personality ever? You bet

Should have added an 'O' to the end of his name though...

Superbly charismatic man and supremely intelligent too. Had a massive impact on the world around him and made the blueprint for build up's to fights what it is (sad a few take it too far).

His treatment of some who helped him in his hour of need leaves a lot to be desired though and for that reason I'll always prefer Frazier.

Bit odd you used a slave name he hated to pay tribute to him though Bry.

Knew you would pull me up on that, Can't argue with you there!

Truely the greatest

Remember;

Henry Cooper putting him down only for Clay to get a 2 min rest coz his glove 'mysteriously split' aka deliberately cut
getting up at 2-00am or so to watch the Liston fight via Telstar with Harry Carpenter.
He was, up to a point, his own worst enemy in his battles with the establishment over vietnam.
The Echo headline on the back page ( back when it was a proper newspaper ) after his defeat by Frazier
Cassius has feet of Clay.
Then watching on tv in the Noahs Ark Foreman knock Frazier off his feet...needless to say I was astounded when Clay actually beat him

He had one fight too many. I think Larry Holmes gave him a pasting

Am I that pedantic? Sorry.

I love the way he boxed. Hit and not get hit. He boxed like Cubans will if they ever get into the sport professionally.

I'd take the thriller over the rumble though, all day!
