Everton at a canter. A thoroughly professional performance from a very good side.

Barkley and Lennon were a cut above today.

For our part, I felt we got it all wrong. We started with 4 central midfielders, I'm guessing the plan was to make us competitive in the middle of the park. Unfortunately that left us massively exposed on the flanks - a weakness which was exploited throughout the first half, beginning with the opening goal.

The substitutions made at half time gave us a bit more width. Still, in truth we never seriously threatened to get back into it.

Can I take this opportunity to denounce any Carlisle 'fan' who chose to abuse your players, racially or otherwise. Banter is fine, abuse is not. That said, I was on the Warwick Road End and never heard anything of the sort. There was no racist chant. I guess it must have been a case of one idiot spoiling it for the rest of us.

Plenty of police around, some of them looking terrified... but no trouble that I saw. Some decent banter on the train to and from Carlisle.

Well played Toffees, hope it's your year for cup glory!
Well said mate. You're showing massive character to post on here after a defeat and offer good sense, sound analysis and admirable sportsmanship. Good luck to you for the rest of your season, and hopefully the few quid we've raised should help a bit towards the flood repairs. Sorry we couldn't do more.

Cheers mate.I walked to and from the Park and Ride and your fans were all dead friendly.

It was dead weird walking past all those houses with dehumidifier extracts hanging out their letterboxes. I've seen flood damage before, but never over such a large area. Hopefully they'll be back in their homes asap and it'll never be as bad again.

Great ground you've got by the way and it was ace to see it full ;)
Ye walked past them houses myself it must have been terrible, great turnout by the travelling blues again

Great old ground, superb fans, friendly locals. The applause for Ross when he was subbed was sheer class.
Accidentally found a pub (The Linton Home) after the match where the atmosphere was terrific.
Match-going like it should be.
Also, proud of all the Evertonians who gave via the Fans Forum to aid the people affected by the floods. As others have said, the sheer scale of the flood damage. We parked off Brook Street and walked past street upon street of empty houses and skips. Never seen anything like that.
Finally, congratulations to all the people who worked on the preparation of Brunton Park to ensure that the match could go ahead.
A memorable day all round.
Oh yes, and we won!

Best of luck for the rest of the season

Nice preview and job well done! What a change it makes to take an early lead, add to it and then keep it!

I've been thinking lately that there must be some clever Blue good at maths who can come up with a formula for something like the inverse relationship between the number of postings in a match thread vis-a-vis the outcome/fume level of rage and/or satisfaction level of the supporters. Let's develop an app which we can sell in the Apple store and we'll all get rich!

Job done and on we go... but this game's performance mirrors how we've played this and last season! Sure we had some great individual performances, but still, very basic mistakes were being made and we showed no killer instinct to turn the knife once we have teams where we need them.

It's driving me crazy that the potential of this squad is not being achieved, for whatever reason. Hopefully this win clears the head space of the players and managers and we move forward by turning Newcastle over.... yeah i know :coffee:

One incident should not obscure a special occasion

League Two Carlisle United’s 3-0 fourth round defeat to Everton should be remembered for the indomitable effort of those Cumbrians who somehow, and against all odds, enabled the club to get this game on in the wake of the devastation inflicted on Brunton Park and the surrounding area by December’s floods.

Then there was a wonderful performance from Everton’s Ross Barkley and the beautiful, elegant, simplicity of Roberto Martínez’s team’s football. Most of the headlines concentrated on an isolated incident of alleged racist abuse directed towards Arouna Koné and Steven Pienaar after Koné scored the opening goal. It is right there should be zero tolerance towards such behaviour and Carlisle dealt with the matter very well, issuing a public address announcement stressing this was not on.

It should not be allowed to obscure the generally generous spirited atmosphere of the home crowd who offered Barkley a splendid standing ovation when he was substituted. As Martínez put it: “Carlisle United deserve incredible credit for getting the game on. They’ve given us all a lesson of how to face adversity in life and football.”
