Car buying / new car

Would not be getting a car at the moment unless absolutely necessary, prices are crazy.

The lease car I’ve got is about 30% more per month today than last summer when I got it.

Used market is ridiculous too.

I got a new Corolla Estate Hybrid. Nice to drive. Auto CVT gearbox - Loads of electric gadgets to play with in it.
65mpg Motorway and A roads. Eating tyres though. Fronts changed after 22,000. Rears getting close after 26,0000 (It's 12 months old now)

I was talking to my mate about this, who has a medium size garage and does a bit of buying and selling off the forecourt to supplement the repair side of things.

He said it`s because the likes of We Buy any Car and all the other " we`ll buy it now " companies have now got the market monopoly on used cars and as such control the trade side of the secondhand car market. The cars they buy are "fed " back into the second market via auction houses and garages that they either own or have an interest in.

You can still get a decent car in the private market, but as always, you have to know what you`re doing.

Might be a bit bonkers too because effectively there is a year's less mileage on most cars due to covid. You can easily find 2 year old cars with less than 10k.

Usually get my cars from an auction manhaim or bca but since covid they're
closed to the general public .Been waiting to change my car for 12 month but i won't pay dealer prices. Hopefully gets back to normal soon.

I was the same until my job meant I’m doing 30k a year. Wouldn’t go near a manual again now, love the laziness of an auto!
This.
And if you've a dicky left knee like I had at the time an hour or more stop start traffic and 200 clutch upclutch down gear changes converted me...I bought an old automatic Cortina and had my local garage swap the engines over.
1300 to 2 litre - more power, vroom vroom
Jobs a goodun.

Edit; If you can get the new car you want and 2nd hand prices skyrocketing

If you do a lot of miles, particularly in rush hour, then automatic is essential. After a life-time of manual, I changed to automatic about 25 years ago. Best thing I ever did.

On the secondhand price issue, some of my mates with one or two year old Mustangs are being offered more than they paid for them by WBAC and the like.
