Car buying / new car

Starting a new thread because it looks like an older one has been closed. Shame, as it was useful.

Anyway, I'm looking at swapping my motor (again). Only recently brought a Hyundai I30 1.6 dci automatic. Now wrong with it and the automatic shifter is fine, just need something bigger due to circumstances changing.

I have a 60 mile per day motorway / a-road commute so want to stick with a diesel. Eying up automatic Skoda Octavia estates. Just wanted to get the views of anyone who owns one. I'm interested in knowing of the 1.6 or 2ltr option is better (is the extra power worth it? Is there a significant mpg sacrifice? Etc).

Also interested in other suggestions.

Cheers.

Ps for @Alan Whittle this would mean the option of another colour...

No recommendations as such, but have you thought about leasing at all? Its where I'm heading next I think for a new car.

Also, if you aren't bothered about performance then a 1.6 diesel will be nippy enough for commuting id have thought. Plus like you said you'd lose some MPG going up to 2 litre.

I've never quite been taken by the prospect of leasing. I guess if the deal was right it might work.

I’ve never drove an automatic. It’s on a bucket list but feel like it’s an old mans thing. Need to wait a few more years or the job gives me an automatic.

Fifty Shades of Red. Chapter Two.

I have an A3 2.0TDI (150) 6 speed DSG and my wife has a Seat Leon 1.6TDI (110) 7 speed DSG, I would need to be paid to drive her car over mine and that is all down to the engine and gearbox. Mine is quieter, much more power and the 6 speed automatic wet clutches are far smoother than the dry 7 speed ones.

Benefits of the 1.6 is that it is a lot better fuel economy wise and the dry clutches don't need a £240 oil change service every 40k. The 7 speed ones seem to be the only option if you are buying new though.

You know, I always turned my nose up at them. But my missus can't drive a manual for toffee. I'm not even sure how she passed her test in a manual to be honest. Anyway, I moved to an auto as she needs to drive occasionally but not enough to justify two cars. It's alright actually. Chuck it in sport mode, you can surprise folk off the lights too.

I’ve heard people are ho have drove manual cars for 30 years and get in an automatic and really struggle lol

People just say it’s like driving a go kart, like I’ve ever drove one of them.

I was the same until my job meant I’m doing 30k a year. Wouldn’t go near a manual again now, love the laziness of an auto!
