Why? To be fair, he seemed very pleased to have his ex-regiment there, well what the DWR amalgamated into, so I think that’s all that matters.

Because why does it matter was his job was? Are people meant to hold him in a higher regard because of it?

I don't mean him personally, just the way everywhere is reporting it.

Are you bothered that the regiment was there this morning or because they’re referring to him as Captain and mentioning his war service?

The referring to him as captain and his war service is what I was referring to.

Again, not him personally as he seems to be playing that part down too, it's just the constant view in the media that being in the army is of more importance than other jobs. They wouldn't say anything if he was the warehouse manager at Pets At Home.

What if he was a Professor or Dr, should his title be removed then too?

Genuinely can't tell if you're trolling... I really hope that you are... but if not.... the guy fought in WW2... I reckon he's earned the right to be referred to by his proper title.

There's definitely been times when the use of our military has been morally questionable in the extreme, but surely, SURELY we can all get behind a guy who fought the NAZIS being given his proper due ffs?

Tell you what, if you can find a Pets at Home warehouse manager who reckons their job is as important has 1) what this fella did in serving in a world war or 2) what he's accomplished over the last week or so, then crack on. Til then, stop making absurd statements to look edgy on an internet forum.

Amen

I think that's the point.

Rightly or wrongly, the precedent is that certain professions are held in high-regard and as such after retirement they're still referred to by their title.

With regards to him, he was conscripted into the army (not out of choice) as an enlisted man and showed prowess to the point he was given a commission.

He served in India, where again his prowess was displayed so he became an instructor at Bovington (historic home of the Royal Armoured Corps.).

Whether you're supportive of the forces or not, I think he's personally done enough to earn the respect of referring to him by his official title, like doctors etc.

With regards to general perspective of whether rank/position should be acknowledged, there'll be lots of people who don't agree but I suspect more who do.

Hence, why it's the norm - if public opinion was the other way around, he wouldn't.
