Can anyone think of examples of the European Union overriding national law?

It's part of the Council of Europe, which includes states like Russia and Turkey which aren't part of the EU.
We signed up to the Council of Europe as founding members with the Treaty of London in 1949, long before joining the EU. The original inspiration was from several radio broadcasts and speeches given by Churchill.

Interesting. Explains why I wasn't consulted, though I'm still slightly outraged.
