Cambridge?

I'll be making less in this made up thing I call currency units (where I don't convert anything), but things seem to be a bit cheaper in that made up currency (i.e. a car for £18000 that costs $26000 here).

If I convert things get confusing as hell. I'd be making more money if I convert, by a fair bit, but everything costs more by a fair bit when converting...well...not everything.

I do that too with Euros/Pounds. Everything in England seems about 20% more expensive than in Germany so they roughly cancel each other out.

Cambridge would be small-town life if you're used to big bustling cities. I did Pirmasens (circa 40k population) for over a year sandwiched between 7-8 years each in London/Berlin. It was a lovely time-out, but soon the Big City Life itch came back.

If you're really not fussed, and London's not far from Cambridge anyway, then maybe give it a crack.

Something else to consider is perhaps healthcare? I was always under the impression that American salaries were lower than British ones because your healthcare is taken out before you get paid, whereas ours is taken out afterwards. I wonder if when you take out tax, our salaries are that much different to US ones?

OECD data suggests the average British family has around $27,000 left after tax. Think the US is a bit higher than that.

Is that £ or $? Then again, I don't know anybody from the US that thinks in take-home pay. Salary conversations always seem to be in gross figures.

I used to drive in there with work, full of tourists and students that all ride stupid retro bikes with baskets on the front and harry potter scarfs on, not even joking.

That be in $$. I was just thinking that taxes here are 'probably' a bit higher than in the US, so it may be something to consider too. If you Google 'income tax calculator' there are various tools you can use to figure out your take home pay each month.

There's loads of Americans with their pick ups and mustangs round Mildenhall and Lakenheath. Can see you fitting right in.
