Anyone live in Cambridge? Or visited a fair bit? What's it like?

I have a job offer there, and am considering it, but it's obviously a pretty ridiculous move and wouldn't mind some local advice about the area.

Cheers

I am in Cambridge probably one day a fortnight for meetings. It's a great place and I love the overall feel of the place. But there's quite a bit to consider. The traffic is terrible throughout the town centre. The housing market rising strongly so it's a challenge to get quality for any sort of modest outlay (so relocation issues are key to work through at the outset).

Overall it's quite a small town with a very strong micro economy built around the university. The town itself is dominated by the university and the tourists that accompany it in a way that say Oxford isn't.

It's got good transport links and you're only ever a few miles into the countryside. One other point on the negative side is that, in my experience, the bars and restaurants are not what you'd expect for a globally renowned city.

Haven't been to Cambridge in more than 15 years but I have friends in Oxford and that area in the country is expensive as hell to live in.

This is one of the most annoying things about figuring out if it's a good decision. I'll be making less in this made up thing I call currency units (where I don't convert anything), but things seem to be a bit cheaper in that made up currency (i.e. a car for £18000 that costs $26000 here). Other than housing. Housing is just f'ing expensive.

If I convert things get confusing as hell. I'd be making more money if I convert, by a fair bit, but everything costs more by a fair bit when converting...well...not everything. I am so jealous of how much you guys pay for mobile phone bills, cable, and internet. But most things!

Lived there about twenty years ago in a small village about five miles away, still go back regular. Property to rent or buy is expensive due to university but a great place to live.

Fond memories of Cambridge, sigh!

Are you bringing a family as well, as that has to be part of the consideration? In common with many parts of the UK it might be difficult to get children into a school of choice. Similarly what does Mrs RB (if there is one) do? It can be quite a challenge being an ex-pat wife in a place where you know no-one.
