The problem with Cahill's position is a tough one.

When we look at international trends, we see that the 4-4-2 is a system of the past, mostly. There are way too many counter systems that eat 4-4-2 up alive. Everton never really played 4-4-2 but a 4-5-1 / 4-4-1-1. This is also why we we actually stand a chance against the bigger teams. The seven guys in the middle (including the sidebacks) are tough to get by and even when you do, you still have two fullbacks ruining your attack. This is where Timmy actually plays best in my opinion: In a midfield where there's so many men in the enemie's half that he can sneak through and poach a goal.

Times have changed. Everton will be having a tough time with the current system. International post-worldcup trends have shown that the two most effective lineups against top- and low-tier enemies are 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 with 1 or 2 defensive midfielders, respectively. When playing like this, there is probably no real space for Timmy to shine I suppose. When I look at our second season half games, we did not overwhelm the enemy with pressing... what we did was box-to-box rushing with quick passing. If we'd play with 2 DMF (probably Felli and Rodwell), who should be our creative-minded central midfielder? Arteta would fit this role much better than Timmy because his passing is better and he can swap with a winger while Cahill is not exactly the flexible kind of midfielder. When playing 4-1-4-1, there'd still be a place for Timmy but I think that Moyes will do a 4-1-3-2 formation with Becks and Saha up front. There is simply no space for Cahill except from the bench to go 4-1-3-1-1.

He is probably the best supporting striker in the PL, maybe even the world. Too bad that this role seems to die at the moment.

Don't get me wrong .... I love Timmy. He's my fav. player... I just think that what's happening now to support strikers is the same thing that happened to sweepers: not needed for the current systems, too good to sit on the bench. Cahill might just try and incorporate a more central role in his game.
