now you're gonna hear about it
Question for the US mates homies. We've been offline (broadcast or netflix only) for about 12 years, but it looks like we're getting a subscription to one of these packages. It will be at least mid-tier (has to include NBCSN) with HD and DVR, and I know there are many options (TiVO, bundles, etc). Any advice, experiences, etc? I really don't care much about NFL Sunday Ticket or the SEC Network (big deal in these parts, but I can always catch a game with a friend if needed.)

Cheers, -SN

Honestly, there isn't much to tell. My cable provider is RCN (TIVO) and my package is around $100 a month. One main box in my living room and 2 other mini boxes in 2 bedrooms, DVR, decent internet speed etc... The package i have is middle tier as you say with lots of HD channels.

Experiences ? I would swerve Verizon and Comcast. I don't know how they manage to do it but i've been with both in the past and my monthly bill was always around $150-$180 a month.

I massively hate Time Warner. For reasons I don't even recall.

I have DirecTV. It's not bad honestly. No idea how much it costs. Something less that $100 I think?

Got the main box then two secondary boxes (bedroom/bonus room). Not sure what tier we're on. I know we have NBCSN, as the football is the main reason we have cable.

Basically they haven't offended me personally in the year+ we've been with them. Which is better than Comcast or Time Warner. Then again, I clearly don't pay attention and they could be offending my wife left right and sideways, but I haven't heard about it yet so I don't think that's the case.

Does kind of suck during Southern thunderstorms having the signal go, but eh, pretty sure it's cheaper.

My choices are Comcast, DirecTV, and Dish. AT&T's U-Verse is not yet available (they sell DirecTV under the U-Verse name). Comcast has the worst service and customer service. Some locals rave over Dish support, but NBCSN doesn't appear to be an option until you buy an upper-tier package, so this may rule them out. I'm probably leaning towards DirecTV, but not certain.

How much?! I know you can buy more dollar for your pound by some distance these days but that is expensive!

POINT OF ORDER USA WOOLS.

You know I like you but you never address more than one mate as mates. You can refer to them as your mates when talking about them but calling them mates makes you stick out like a big North American WOOL.

Use lads instead.

Comcast here, and finding that service is somewhat better than it was (a low bar, to be sure). Their broadband is still much faster than anything else I could get anywhere else, and the streaming from NBCSN has been spot on all year. I do need the sports package to follow all the SEC and B1G sports I follow during football and basketball seasons, not to speak of...

(pauses)

RedZone

(choir of angels).

Hate the name, but love the finest product even conceived in the halls of the NFL Network. You go right from EPL to NFL, and never ever have to have a Chris Berman sighting. Hosannas in the highest.

One thing I don't know: on what channels are Europa League games televised in the US?

*i know i can look it up, but maybe someone can save me the effort
Last season they were on the Fox Sports 1 & FS2 - they usually had the Spurs or Swansea match live but didn't see much of Wigan other than on their later replays. Those channels also had the champions league.

Up to last year we were also offline but signed up with AT&T uverse u300 package when I realised that NBC were going to show all our games live. Since we had not had a service before we got a good 3mnth intro offer but we have been able to keep much of that rate by threatening to switch to Comcast which is the service most of our friends have. Sorry, no experience with either DISH or DirectTV.
