Just watching the Schalke v Monchengladbach cup tie and clocked the tunnel as they were coming out for the 2nd half.

Apparently they had it done last season to make it look like a coal mine (Schalke being in a coal mine region - they want to show their affiliation with the local workforce).

One of their commonly used nicknames, especially by their own fans, is Die Knappen which translates as the miners.

Gelsenkirchen and the surrounding area was the primary coal-mining region of the Ruhr and it's created a strong legacy within the city.

Still as you mention it's a little bit creepy, but I'm sure it'll to some point intimidate opposition before their 'boisterous' fans add to it even more.
