Wigan have given Sunderland the go-ahead to speak to their manager Steve Bruce about taking over as the new Black Cats boss, BBC Sport understands.

Bruce, 48, took over at Wigan in November 2007 and guided them to 11th in the Premier League this season.

"We understand that Wigan have given Sunderland permission to approach Steve Bruce," said BBC Radio 5 Live's senior football reporter Ian Dennis.

The Latics have not confirmed whether they have received an approach.

"Agreement must have been reached between the two parties with regards to compensation," added Dennis. "Steve Bruce cost Wigan £3m from Birmingham in November 2007.

"He will now be talking to Sunderland and, bearing in mind the amount of money that will be available with the takeover by Ellis Short there seem to be exciting times are promised on Wearside.

"The increasing possibility is that Steve Bruce will be Sunderland's new manager by the end of the week."

American investor Ellis Short, who bankrolled the club's summer transfer spending in 2008, confirmed on Wednesday that he is to assume 100% control of the club.

Sunderland are searching for a third boss in three years after Sbragia, who guided the club to Premier League safety on Sunday, resigned immediately afterwards.

"We need somebody who will come in and attract the type of player that Sunderland needs," said Quinn.

The Black Cats were strongly linked with Gordon Strachan, who resigned as Celtic manager on Monday.

Former England manager Steve McClaren, who is currently at Dutch side FC Twente, Croatia head coach Slaven Bilic and ex-Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard have also been linked with the club.

Former Hamburg manager Martin Jol was also mentioned in conjunction with the post, but has just joined Ajax.

Bruce started his managerial career at Sheffield United in 1998 and has since been in charge of Huddersfield, Crystal Palace and Birmingham in addition to two spells at Wigan.

I like Stevie Bruce, I think he's done a bang up job at Wigan and made them a solid side now that would improve next season.

If he's been cleared to talk to Sunderland - who apparantly have millions to spend - I'm guessing Wigan cant give Bruce any dough and he wants off. But if they flog Valencia for silly money (which they can do), I'm sure he'll be able to bag some players.

True...but that Yank has just taken over as the majority shareholder and will be pumping millions into the club....

Expect to be blown out of the water transfer budget wise this summer.

Did Ellis Short fail the Kenwright 'suitability' investment checklist?

The search goes on 26/9.

They'll also make about £10-15mill when they sell Kenawaye Jones. And there's got to be a clear out of shiite like Healey etc, so whoever takes the job will be rolling around in £ coins and wiping their arse with fivers all summer.

£30M spent last summer on Anton Ferdinand, Chimbonda, El-Hadji Diouf, and Steed Malbranque. Madness.

Didn't Chimbonda get sold back to spurs? They are not keeping Cisse. Ferdinand was £8 million. Chimbonda was approximately £3 million in, then the same back. Diouf £2.6 million. I see it now, Chimbonda, Malbranque, and Tainio all went to Sunderland for a combined £17 Million. Being picky it appeard closer to £28 million, but it is still a gauling waste.

And they'll have about £40mill to spend this year. So if Bruce gets the job, expect half the Mexican/Columbian national team to be in Sunderland shirts next season.

He helped build a decent starting 11 at Wigan before everybody poached their players. I also have to give him credit for making Titus Bramble competent.
