British Super League

Would pave the way for a GB national side as far as FIFA are concerned. None of us would want that.

They could just point at the Benelux league as precedent.

Or the Swiss league to a much lesser degree I suppose.

I don't really see any reason why FIFA would want to merge the teams into GB. The more members the better for them.

They should just have one European League for a few hundred teams and they play each other once in China and once in America.

Is the Benelux league actually a thing yet?

Not sure what you mean about the Swiss league either?

No not yet but they have all voted for it to happen and could happen as soon as 2025. It's a workable system as beneath the top flight it splits in to 2 with a Dutch and Belgian half so you still get to keep the structure more or less.

Teams from Liechtenstein play in the Swiss league system as Liechetenstein doesn't have its own league (yet does have an FA cup)

Actually MLS and the A League too I suppose. Both have teams from two countries in their leagues.

Thanks for clearing those up for me.

The Benelux is interesting but it’s still two distinct ‘nations’ sharing a league. England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland are all constituent parts of the ‘United Kingdom’ and are allowed separate teams due to historical tradition (England v Scotland being the first recognised international game).

The Lichtenstein example seems similar to teams like Cardiff and Swansea being in the English football league.

The Old Firm are massive clubs with lots of extremely wealthy supporters. They would take a few years to adjust, but the idea they would not be competitive in time is bonkers.

I could see Celtic, in particular, getting vast injections of cash from Irish money and fighting it out quite quickly.

13 August 2022: BSL Results
Celtic 1-0 Wrexham
Man Utd 2-0 Liverpool
Chelsea 5-0 Rangers
Manx 1-4 Mancs
Sark XI 1-0 Arsenal (ARTETAAAH, HE'S GOTTA GO FAM)
Guernsey Select 3-2 Jersey Royals.....

.....no, me neither. NEEEEEEEEXT

Leagues would have to merge with English and Scottish (and Welsh) teams all being on equal footing and having league divisions with fairly even prize money distribution, otherwise it's just a more local version of the euro Scab League.

I don't see it happening and what if Scotland voted for independence?

All very tricky.

Yeah kind of, their own domestic league can not support the teams involved (well Vaduz mainly) so they go into the bigger league.

FIFA is slightly different because you have teams who are not technically nations playing (The Faroes and Gibraltar for example who are both fairly recent additions) so I think it would be fine. FIFA will be happy to have more "nations" as it means more FA's to pay fees to them etc.
