British Coaches And Players Abroad

Good to see this kind of thing. If opportunities to compete at the top level don't exist in England, then I wish more players and coaches would try their luck overseas.

The likes of Hodgson and McClaren have been criticized in the past, but they've both tried their luck abroad and achieved a degree of success in doing so. I doff my cap to both.

Without doubt. I think English football can be a bit too comfortable at times.

Yes. It's rare to see English/British coaches coming up with any original tactical variations. It's often the same Allardyce/Moyes et al rigid stuff.

Hope some of those go on to prove themselves. I found the interviews with Gary White and Anthony Hudson particularly interesting.

That's just the known ones!

There is A LOT Who are are in the Scandanavian leagues, who we've never even heard of. Good on them i say, why have to be stuck with the pressures of English football? I mean if you look back at Managers like Hodgson, Robson, McClaren, Venables, Toshack have all had very good success abroad, the anomoly being McClaren, who's the only one in recent time really, which just goes to show how comfortable British footballers and managers have it. Take a glance at the premier league and see all the different nationalities, and then look at Serie A, La Liga and the Bundesliga, and you'd probably be able to count the players from the UK in one hand, from the top of my head, i can think of Bale, Mancienne and Lafferty.

The lesser known ones like Stuart Baxter, Tony Knapp and Neil Masters have had spells of continues success abroad, and good on them.

So i agree with the poster who said that English footballers have it too well, because, well, they do.

Not enough go abroad.

My lad had a guest coach at one of his footy acads he goes to, british fella who works in Holland.

He said that if this exact group of boys was in Holland/Spaid now, 2 of the players would have been with Ajax & Barca 3 years ago.

But he knows these 2 will be lost in the British system.

I hadn't ever heard of Rio Ave, but it appears they play in the top flight of Portuguese football, so whilst they're not one of the big clubs out there, it's still a decent level. 12 Brazilians on their roster too, which is interesting. There's an interview here with Ian Cathro on why he went to Portugal

The single biggest problem for Cathro was that he felt he would never get the chance to reach the very top if he stayed because the culture in Scottish football dictates that to become a manager, you must once have been a player.

Kinda sums it up here too doesn't it? I mean how many on this site still judge a coach by his playing career? Duncan Ferguson is a prime example. He's judged almost purely on his playing career and character as a player. Very little on any coaching abilities he may or may not have.

He's only in his 20's. Hopefully he'll have a top coaching career.

He sounds promising. I think a lot of British coaches complain about that. They spend years learning their trade and then ex-players get fast tracked into key positions.
