Met him in our hotel after the CWC Final,he was decent enough, chatted football, said he would love to have Sharpy in one of his sides, was very complimentary about the football club and the city and got a round in before he went to his room, have to say he wasnt the type of person you would choose as a friend, might just be the way he spoke but always felt like he was above you,I wonder how he would have coped with the stars of today
I remember his gracious co-commentary of the final with Brian Moore - he said that this young Everton side would be a force to be reckoned with for a long, long time...
Until our loveable neighbours rocked up to Brussels a fortnight later......

I just cant see any of the "old school" managers having the same success in todays game, you only have to see the way they can stop playing for teams if the manager upsets them

Well Fergie only retired 6 years ago, and he just sold them. That said, the finances at United versus Forest were always light years apart. Lets be honest, the drink did for Clough in his later days in the game. Dreadful shame, but that will never diminish his standing in the history of the game.

As I said he was full of praise for the team, manager and the way they played,a slight link to him commentating, after he had gone to his room we were sitting in the bar area and a lad pops his head in and asks if Mr Clough is about,we tell the lad hes gone to his room and the lads goes the bar gets a pint and a chaser and sits with us,tells us hes a Forest player, youth or reserve team,he supports Everton,Clough knew this and had told him he could get him a great seat for the final but it would cost a few quid, turns out Clough got him a press pass, charged him a months wages for it and told him to go straight back to the hotel after the game as he would be phoning the front desk up to check he was there

Was listing to the radio today and they were talking about Clough. Interestingly when he was manager, the Home Secretary at the time was a massive Forrest fan.
Clough apparently used to contact him to use his influence to bend the rules on work permits for players Forrest where trying to sign. Wonder if that still happens today.

" We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide i was right "

Unique character to say the least.

If this fella didn't put a smile on your face or make you laugh, then footy isn't for you.
