he reasons behind the pontiff's surprise resignation have yet to emerge.

At 78, the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was one of the oldest new popes in history when elected.

Yewtree the 'religious man,' far too many implications in his past, Nazi's, covering up abuses are that should have put him in the clink, for him to be voted into his job implicates the rest of them as well as far as I'm concerned.

They simply wouldn't take that risk. It'd destroy the church.

I like conspiracy theories as much as the next guy but this one is completely implausible.

I accept that a good chunk of the Catholic church are "up to no good", to put it mildly, but realistically Ratzinger was "clean". The only stick people use to beat him with is the Hitler Youth thing, which any historian will tell you was compulsory for anyone who lived in that era.

It'd be like criticising me for going to school.

Even the Vatican's harshest critics say that they're a closed, paranoid institution. There's no way they could afford to elect a right wing lunatic pedophile to the highest office of their organisation.

I agree tbh, was just playing devils advocate. It's a really strange decision though, as even illness shouldn't be enough for a Pope to resign, so the root cause of this decision must be really strong.

& his instructions to Bishops and Clergy regarding abuse ? he basically gave instruction to overide any law of any land, told them all to keep schtum to anyone outside of the church i.e. the lawmakers.
